[ the pretty peacock * ]

[ you're a song,
written by the hands of god.
dont get me wrong,
this might sound to you a bit odd,
but you own the place,
where all my thoughts go hiding.. * ]

anw, i was reading evo psych today.
YAYS.
IM FINALLY READING!!!!
=x

evo psych is damn interesting, to my surprise.
i used to find it a load of bullshit, cos well.
a guy can always blame his infidelity on evolution,
cos they were 'designed' to sow their seeds far and wide.
then they were excused for their promiscuity cos of evolution..
and i rmb that males will be attracted by young women with good figures cos it means better babies or sth.
so it's like men can even attribute their shallowness to evolution! what bull!!

and i've always wondered to myself, on what basis are these conclusions made?
like we cant go back to the past, then there wont be any evidence that these theories are true...

but so far, the textbook's been really interesting.
even readings are an eye-opener.
and the video, i learnt quite a bit from the video michael made us watch.

and, you know how peacocks have pretty tails, and peahens are so ordinary and dull-looking?
ive always been asking my parents why is that so when i was young.
it didnt make sense cos it's like usually it's the females that are expected to be pretty.
like in our society.
cos well, men are shallow, so women have to make themselves pretty to attract the opposite sex.
but then agn, now there're things like metrosexuality, ubersexuality,
which kinda reflects on the female population too.
cos it might mean we're getting shallow too, that's why the males are experiencing a pressure to look good.
or it can also mean that the media's making everyone shallow, with all that emphasis on outer beauty.

then today, the textbook answered my question!
natural selection is the tendency for those best adapted to the envt to produce more offspring.
so having such a long, pretty tail would seem rather useless to the peacock cos it kinda hinders the survival of it, like when there's a predator, the stupid tail will get in the way of escaping for the poor peacock.
but it's like, in most species, it's the males who have evolved these pretty adornments like pretty tails, or for deers, antlers, which dont contribute to its survival.

but then, the tail helps the male to attract females.
so while it's more likely to be preyed upon by predators, it's also more likely to mate while it's alive.
thus, it'll leave more offsprings than those with ugly tails.
which also mean, at the end of the day, pretty-tailed peacocks will be more common than ugly peacocks.
=)

ok ive left out certain parts but that's the main gist of it i think.
so YAYS. i know why it's the peacocks that are pretty now.
it may also answer why male guppies have prettier tails than female guppies, i think?

and well,
i always have another answer to overzealous christian friends now. =x
im sorry, but no i dont want to go to church. i believe in evolution.

oh well. i just dont like how they practically force and drag you to church.
or how they tell you they're having a dance class, or a tea party, or a concert.
and you turn up, they start discussing christianity, or probe into my private life.
isnt this supposed to be a bloody dance class?!

you can have your religion, your intuitions, and your beliefs.
but you cannot think that they'll apply to me, to everyone.
that they're correct for everyone.
respect.
you've been a singaporean for so long, im sure you've learnt a thing or two about respecting other races, other cultures. and tolerance.
why isnt that being translated into respecting other forms of beliefs and religion?
why must you insist that your god is the best.
that your god is superior?
havent you learnt from all the deaths that were a result of terrorism,
that proving that your god is superior isnt worth it?
when so many lives are lost so prematurely, so tragically.

i think i can safely say,
that if not for religion,
the world would have (significantly?) less wars, and suffering.

isnt it a funny thing?
when ppl turn to religion to experience peace and tranquility.

im not against the religion.
all religion have a good cause, i believe.
it's how ppl interpret the religion that causes problems.
all the riots and wars.

is that our death instinct working against us then?
